Providence with kids

Providence is one of the most underrated family cities in the Northeast — walkable, with a great zoo, a classic carousel, a kids' museum five minutes from PVD Loft, WaterFire lightings, and an easy food scene. Here's what to do with kids, and why the loft is set up for a family trip.

Things to do with kids in Providence

The kid-tested Providence list

12 min

Roger Williams Park Zoo

One of the oldest zoos in America, consistently rated one of the best mid-sized zoos in the Northeast. Giraffes, elephants, a well-designed North American exhibit. Plan for 3-4 hours. Free parking, reasonable admission, kid-stroller friendly paths.

12 min

Carousel Village (Roger Williams Park)

A classic 1890s carousel plus small rides. $5-10 for a few rides makes for a 45-minute burst of pure kid joy. Pair with the zoo or do them on separate mornings.

5 min walk

Providence Children's Museum

Interactive museum in the Jewelry District, a 5-minute walk from PVD Loft. Best for kids ages 1-8. Good for rainy days or a morning before lunch. Free parking nearby.

5 min walk

WaterFire (May–November)

On nights it's running, WaterFire is magic for kids — fire on the water, music, a festival atmosphere, vendors, performers. The basin is a five-minute walk from the loft. Evening event; kids stay up past bedtime but remember it forever.

10 min

RISD Museum

Free on Sundays. The kids' rooms include an ancient Egyptian mummy (always a hit with 8-year-olds) and sculpture galleries that reward slow walking. Compact enough for a 90-minute family visit.

At the door

The Pedestrian Bridge & Riverwalk

Walking distance: everywhere. The riverwalk is stroller-friendly and scenic. Bridges to cross, boats to watch, ice cream at the end (Scoop's on S. Main, Cold Fusion on Wickenden).

Why the loft works for families

Space and sanity for the whole family

3 BR

Kids in their own room

Two master suites plus a third bedroom. Parents, kids, and optional grandparents each have a room. No sharing a bed with a toddler who kicks.

Kitchen

Feed the picky eaters

Full chef's kitchen. Pasta for kids, real meals for adults. Seven Stars Bakery two minutes away for breakfast pastries and coffee. Skip the "where are we going for dinner" negotiation at least half the trip.

Garden

A private yard to run around

Fully enclosed private garden with a fire pit. Kids can run after dinner while adults sit by the fire. Rare for an urban rental.

Streaming

Rainy-day backup

Every TV has Apple TV, Netflix, Disney+, YouTube Kids. When the Providence weather turns (it does), kids have downtime options that don't involve screens on tiny phones.

Parking

Stroller-friendly return

Gated driveway parking means unloading a tired family is a quick walk from car to door. No hunting for a space with a sleeping toddler in the back seat.

Noise

Bedtime works

Blackout blinds in every bedroom. The Jewelry District is a quiet residential-commercial neighborhood — early bedtimes actually stick. Most urban rentals get this wrong.

Kid-friendly food in Providence

Where to eat with kids

Breakfast / brunk

Seven Stars Bakery (2 min walk, bakery-counter service, kid-friendly pastries). Nick's on Broadway (a drive but worth it for brunch). Julian's on Broadway (quirky, good for teens).

Lunch / casual dinner

Dune Brothers (lobster rolls, 2 min walk — lines are reasonable, kids love seafood-by-hand). Xaco Taco (build-your-own, 3 min walk, kid-friendly). Federal Hill's pizza options (Caserta Pizza, Providence Coal-Fired Pizza) are kid-reliable.

Nicer family dinners

Rosalina (Italian comfort food, 5 min walk, welcoming to kids but not chaotic). Bayberry Garden (a step up, works for kids who handle sit-down dinners). Al Forno (legendary Italian; book early, kids allowed, adult portions).

Dessert & snacks

Cold Fusion Gelato (Wickenden Street, East Side). Like No Udder (vegan ice cream near Wayland Square). Seven Stars Bakery has genuinely great cookies.
