RISD Pre-College · Summer Program
RISD Pre-College is a six-week summer immersion for high school art students — and the drop-off weekend, mid-program visit, and final pickup are three big moments families often travel for. PVD Loft is a ten-minute walk from campus, set up for 8, and happens to be the kind of design-forward space a RISD family appreciates.
Why RISD families book here
Up College Hill across the pedestrian bridge. Same walk to the RISD Museum (worth a parents-weekend visit) and to Thayer Street's cafes. Easy return for lunches between orientation events.
Original artwork throughout, burnt-orange wing chairs, exposed copper ductwork, black-steel warehouse windows. Most Airbnbs feel generic; this one is curated. RISD families often comment on this in reviews.
Drop-off weekend often brings parents, younger siblings, and sometimes grandparents who want to see the program. Two master suites plus a third bedroom hold 8 comfortably.
RISD Pre-College drop-off is a high-traffic window for Providence. On-street parking fills fast. The loft's gated driveway holds one car safely out of the congestion.
RISD Pre-College runs in the hottest weeks of the year. Central air throughout the loft — unusually thorough for Providence — means the family actually sleeps well during humid New England summer nights.
Full chef's kitchen. Drop-off dinner the night before, pickup dinner on final Saturday — many RISD families make these tradition meals. Full dining table for 10, relaxed setting.
Planning notes
Most families find it cleanest to book two separate stays — a 2-4 night drop-off stay in late June and a 2-4 night pickup stay in early August. Sometimes with a mid-program parents visit in between. The loft handles all three with ease; book as early as you know dates.
RISD Pre-College students need art supplies, dorm essentials, and personal items. The Target in East Providence (10 min drive) handles everything; AC Moore / Michaels nearby for additional art supplies; the RISD Store on Thayer Street has program-specific items.
Ten-minute walk. One of the best small art museums in the country — strong contemporary collection, famous Egyptian galleries, free admission on Sundays. A natural parents-weekend activity if you're making a mid-program visit.
WaterFire lightings often fall during Pre-College dates. Providence's dining scene is vibrant in summer. The Roger Williams Park Zoo is a 15-minute drive for families with younger siblings. The loft's central location means all of it is easy.
